Communion trays, covers, bread plates and bases all play an important role in keeping the host secure for the service. Communion trays are large, round trays with raised edges. They are often fitted with a tray cover. The purpose of the tray is to hold the wine and bread for communion. Often, large trays are used and are filled with individual cups of wine as well as a small bowl of hosts for the offering. The lids rest on top of the trays and may be decorated with a cross that also serves as a handle. Stackable trays are also available.

The bread plate is a small dish with raised edges that is used to hold the host. The plates often fit within a communion tray if one is being used. Like trays and covers, communion plates are typically made with a silver or gold finish. They are often rather plain as their purpose is mostly functional and they are not always displayed in a prominent location.
